Check the care label. Many trainers and canvas shoes are machine-washable, but some materials such as leather and suede are not suitable.

Pre-treat visible marks. Knock off heavy soil, then treat any visible stains with Stain Remover or Universal Cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes.

Bag it and zip it fully. Place the shoes in the Shoe Washing Bag and close the zip all the way so nothing works loose mid-cycle.

Balance the drum. Wash with a towel, or in with other darks if it is a small separate load, so the machine stays balanced and quiet.

Delicate cycle, 30 degrees maximum. Wash with Sensitive Laundry Liquid or Sensitive Laundry Sheets. No bleach and no fabric softener.

Maximum spin, then air-dry. The bag holds water, so run a maximum spin to shed the excess, then air-dry both the shoes and the bag completely before storing.

✓ One bag for a pair

The bag comfortably fits one pair of men's size 11 shoes, so a standard pair of trainers, canvas shoes or children's shoes washes together in a single bag. Washing a single pair also keeps rubbing to a minimum, which is one reason the bag will not turn white shoes green.

✓ Two bags for larger or bulky shoes

For shoes larger than men's size 11 or particularly bulky styles, use two bags with one shoe in each. Two bags also balance each other in the drum. A single bag should go in with a towel or other darks if it is a small separate wash.

Unzip and shake out trapped lint after each cycle. Air-dry the bag completely before storing. If it is still waterlogged, run an extra spin before hanging. Store it dry in a cool cupboard.
