Is Bathroom & Shower Cleaner safe to use around pets?Updated 9 days ago

TL;DR: For most pets, yes. Bathroom & Shower Cleaner is fragrance-free and mildly alkaline at pH 8 rather than caustic or strongly acidic, with no chlorine bleach, no strong acids and no aerosol propellants. Every animal is different, so we cannot guarantee compatibility with every pet. Keep pets out of the room while you clean, rinse surfaces thoroughly, and let everything dry fully before they have access. It is a bathroom cleaner, not a pet-care product, so never use it on bowls, chew toys or directly on an animal.

Is Bathroom & Shower Cleaner safe to use around pets?

For most pets, yes. Bathroom and Shower Cleaner is formulated without the chemistries most commonly flagged for animals. There is no added fragrance, no chlorine bleach, no strong acids and no aerosol propellants, and the formula is mildly alkaline at pH 8 rather than caustic or strongly acidic. It is Sensitive Choice approved by the National Asthma Council Australia, Dermatest tested and recognised by the Eczema Association of Australasia, all of which screen against ingredients commonly linked to respiratory and skin sensitivity. Every animal has a unique biological makeup, so Koh cannot guarantee compatibility with every pet. If your pet has known chemical sensitivities, or a habit of licking floors and tiles, check with your vet before introducing a new cleaner to the home.

Why is it a more considered pick for pet homes?

Pets live much closer to cleaned surfaces than we do. They walk on floors and bath bases, brush against skirtings and basins, and groom themselves by licking. Residue from cleaning products therefore matters more for them than for us. Bathroom and Shower Cleaner is a rinse-off product, it leaves no perfumed residue behind, and its independent approvals screen against ingredients commonly flagged for respiratory and skin sensitivity. That makes it a more considered option than a conventional bleach or acid-based bathroom cleaner in homes with dogs, cats, rabbits or birds. It is still a bathroom cleaner and not a pet-care product, so it should never be used on bowls, chew toys or directly on an animal.

✓ Why it works in pet homes

Pets live closer to cleaned surfaces than we do, and they groom themselves by licking. Bathroom & Shower Cleaner has no added fragrance, rinses clean, and leaves no perfumed film for a pet to lick or walk through once you have finished and rinsed.

⚠ Not a pet-care product

This is a bathroom cleaner. Do not use it on pet bowls, chew toys, bedding or directly on an animal. For pet-specific jobs such as accidents or bedding, use a product made for that purpose. Store the pack out of reach, as you would any cleaning product.

What precautions should I take when cleaning with pets around?

Keep pets out of the bathroom while you are cleaning by closing the door. Rinse every surface thoroughly with water afterwards and do not leave foam sitting where a pet can reach it. Let surfaces dry fully before pets are allowed back in, and ventilate the room to speed that up. Birds are especially sensitive to airborne cleaning particulate, so move cages away from the room during cleaning and for at least an hour afterwards. For any pet with known respiratory or skin sensitivities, check with your vet before introducing a new cleaner to the home.

✓ Four habits for cleaning around pets

1

Keep pets out. Close the bathroom door. Keep cats, dogs and small animals in another room while you clean.

2

Rinse thoroughly. Water-rinse every surface after cleaning. Do not leave foam sitting where pets can reach it.

3

Let it dry fully. Surfaces should be dry to the touch before pets come back in. Ventilate the room to speed that up.

4

Special care for birds. Move cages away from the room during cleaning and for an hour after. Birds are especially sensitive to airborne particulate.

What should I do if my pet comes into contact with it?

If your pet licks or touches a surface that has not fully dried, rinse the affected area with plenty of water and wipe the pet's paw, face or coat with a damp cloth. If your pet swallows any product directly, or shows signs of irritation such as excessive drooling, vomiting, coughing or skin redness, contact your vet or an out-of-hours veterinary service straight away. Keep the pack to hand so you can read the ingredient list if you are asked for it.
