Which Universal Cloth should I use?Updated 7 hours ago

TL;DR: The difference is weight and colour. Glass Cloths 3pk are 300GSM, a lighter weave that buffs windows and mirrors to a streak-free finish, with no scrubby corner to catch on a pane. Universal Cloths 3pk are a denser 420GSM for general and bathroom cleaning, with a non-scratch scrubby corner for stuck-on spots. Both are the same 84% polyester, 16% polyamide microfibre. Universal Cloths Mixed 4pk covers the whole home in one colour-coded set, and the code is green for general cleaning, blue for bathrooms, white for windows.

Which Universal Cloth should I use?

Pick by weight and by colour. Glass Cloths 3pk are 300GSM, a lighter microfibre weave for windows, mirrors and glass, where the job is buffing to a streak-free shine rather than scrubbing. Universal Cloths 3pk are a denser 420GSM for general and bathroom cleaning, and include a non-scratch scrubby corner for stuck-on spots. Universal Cloths Mixed 4pk is the whole-home set, with general, bathroom and window cloths together. All of them are 84% polyester and 16% polyamide microfibre, thick, large, reusable and machine washable for up to 3,000 washes. The Koh colour code is green for general cleaning, blue for bathrooms and white for windows.

✓ Glass, mirrors and windows

Glass Cloths 3pk are the lighter 300GSM weave, built to buff glass to a streak-free shine rather than scrub it. There is no scrubby corner to catch on a pane. White is the window colour in the Koh code.

What is the difference between Glass Cloths and Universal Cloths?

The difference is the weight of the microfibre and the job each one is built for. Glass Cloths are 300GSM, a lighter weave that polishes windows, mirrors and glass to a streak-free shine, with no scrubby corner to catch on a pane. Universal Cloths are a denser 420GSM for general and bathroom cleaning, and carry a non-scratch scrubby corner for stuck-on spots. Both are the same 84% polyester, 16% polyamide microfibre, both are thick, large, reusable and machine washable. The colours are not decorative: green is for general cleaning, blue is for bathrooms and white is for windows.

✓ What the colours mean

The colours are a system, not decoration. Keeping a cloth to its own colour is what stops a cloth that has been over bathroom surfaces ending up on a mirror.

✓ Why the scrubby corner matters

The non-scratch scrubby corner on the Universal Cloths is there for stuck-on spots on worktops and surfaces. On glass you want an uninterrupted face to buff with, which is why the Glass Cloths are kept plain and lighter at 300GSM.

What are the cloths made of and how long do they last?

Every Koh cloth is microfibre, 84% polyester and 16% polyamide. Universal Cloths for general and bathroom cleaning are 420GSM. Glass Cloths are the lighter 300GSM. Looked after properly they are made to last up to 3,000 washes, which is why every pack is reusable and machine washable rather than disposable. The cloths are manufactured in China.

✓ Up to 3,000 washes

The cloths are made to last up to 3,000 washes, so a pack is meant to be washed and reused rather than replaced. The microfibre lifts dirt and grime without leaving streaks, and washing it correctly is what keeps it doing that.

How do I keep my cloths working?

Wash the cloths separately at 60 degrees maximum, with no bleach and no fabric softener, and line dry only. Looked after that way they last up to 3,000 washes. If a cloth is leaving streaks, check it is fully dry before you start, and if it has absorbed too much water, swap it and finish the job with a dry cloth. Keep each colour to its own area of the house: green for general cleaning, blue for bathrooms and white for windows. There are separate articles covering how to wash the Universal Cloths and how to use them, and you can buy cloths separately to top up the colour you get through fastest.

There is a full guide on how to wash the Universal Cloths, and another on how to use them.

✓ If they are leaving streaks

Make sure the cloth is fully dry before you start. If it has absorbed too much water along the way, swap it out and finish the job with a dry cloth. This is the usual cause of streaks on glass and mirrors.

✓ Keep colours to their zone

Green is for general cleaning, blue is for bathrooms and white is for windows. Stick to the code and a cloth that has been over bathroom surfaces never ends up on a mirror or a worktop. You can also buy cloths separately to top up just the pack you get through.
