Is Universal Cleaner eco-certified and allergy-friendly?Updated 8 days ago

TL;DR: Yes to both. Universal Cleaner has been GECA certified since April 2016, GECA being Australia's only multi-sector ecolabel, and it is Allergy UK certified, vegan and cruelty-free. Behind those marks: two ingredients, no phosphates, no fragrance, and a 2L refill box instead of single-use spray bottles.

What are Universal Cleaner’s environmental credentials?

Yes, Universal Cleaner is eco-certified. It has been GECA certified since April 2016, which makes it Koh's longest-running certification. GECA stands for Good Environmental Choice Australia and is Australia's only multi-sector ecolabel, an independent third-party certification recognised under ISO 14024, assessed against a published standard covering ingredients, packaging, manufacturing and cleaning performance. It is an Australian mark rather than a UK or EU one, because the product is made and certified in Australia, and no UK or EU ecolabel is substituted in its place. Behind the certification, the formula is two ingredients: potassium hydroxide and reverse osmosis water. There are no phosphates, which are the additive most associated with algal blooms in waterways, and no chlorine, no sodium and no antibacterials, which are the ingredients most often flagged as risks for septic tanks and greywater systems. Potassium hydroxide neutralises to potassium salts during normal use, and the formula contains no ingredients known to disrupt wastewater systems. On packaging, Universal Cleaner ships as a 2L bag-in-box refill rather than a pre-mixed single-use spray bottle, so one box refills the same trigger bottle repeatedly instead of adding a new plastic sprayer each time.

✓ GECA certified since April 2016

Universal Cleaner carries the GECA ecolabel, and has done continuously since April 2016. GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) is Australia's only multi-sector ecolabel, recognised under ISO 14024, and it assesses ingredients, packaging, manufacturing and cleaning performance against a published standard.

✓ What goes down the drain

No phosphates, the additive most associated with algal blooms in waterways. No chlorine, no sodium, no antibacterials. Potassium hydroxide neutralises to potassium salts during normal use, and the formula contains no ingredients known to disrupt wastewater systems.

✓ Refill, not single-use

Universal Cleaner ships as a 2L bag-in-box refill rather than a pre-mixed single-use spray. One box refills the same trigger bottle again and again instead of adding a new plastic sprayer to the cupboard each time.

Is Universal Cleaner allergy-friendly?

Yes. Universal Cleaner is certified by Allergy UK, the UK's leading allergy charity, whose certification is awarded after testing for common allergen triggers and is recognised across the UK as a trusted sensitivity mark. Universal Cleaner is the only Koh product that holds Allergy UK approval. The reason it clears that threshold is the formula. With only potassium hydroxide and reverse osmosis water on the ingredient list, there is no synthetic fragrance, no dye, no preservative such as parabens or methylisothiazolinone, and no harsh surfactant to react to. Fragrance and preservatives are among the most common triggers in conventional cleaning products, and neither is present. Fewer additives means fewer irritants and allergens.

✓ Why the formula helps

No synthetic fragrance, no dye, no parabens or methylisothiazolinone, no harsh surfactants. Fragrance and preservatives are two of the most common triggers in conventional cleaners, and neither is in the formula.

What other credentials does Universal Cleaner carry?

Alongside GECA certification and Allergy UK certification, Universal Cleaner is vegan and cruelty-free. Neither ingredient is animal-derived, and Koh does not test products on animals at any stage of development. It is also fragrance-free, kid-friendly, pet-friendly and septic-safe. It is worth being clear about which of these are formal certifications and which are not: GECA and Allergy UK are both independent third-party certifications, while vegan, cruelty-free, kid-friendly, pet-friendly and septic-safe follow directly from the formulation choices rather than from a separate certifying body. Universal Cleaner is also formulated at pH 12.5 with an 18-month shelf life from manufacture.

✓ Independently certified

Universal Cleaner holds two independent third-party marks: GECA, the Australian ecolabel, for environmental performance, and Allergy UK for sensitivity. Both are awarded after independent assessment.
