GECA stands for Good Environmental Choice Australia. It is a not-for-profit certification body that runs an independent, third-party ecolabel covering categories from cleaning products to furniture, building materials and electronics. The GECA Ecolabel is recognised under ISO 14024, the international standard for Type 1 environmental labels, which is the tier that requires assessment against a published multi-criteria standard by an independent body rather than a self-declared claim. GECA standards are developed with scientists and industry through a public peer-review process and are reviewed every four years. GECA is an Australian scheme. It is not a UK or EU certification and it is not a government label.

For cleaning products, GECA assesses against its published Cleaning Products Standard across four broad areas: ingredients, including toxicity, biodegradability and environmental persistence, with specific substances excluded outright; packaging, including recyclability and recycled content; manufacturing, including waste output, water use and energy use in production; and product performance, where the product must demonstrate it actually cleans against published test methods. To carry the Ecolabel a product must meet every applicable criterion in the standard, and it is independently audited at certification and again at each four-year renewal. Certification is granted product by product. It is never granted to a brand as a whole.

Eight products in the Koh UK range are GECA certified. Universal Cleaner has been certified since April 2016. Dishwashing Tabs have been certified since March 2023 and Loo Cleaner Tabs since July 2023. Bathroom and Shower Cleaner, Kitchen Grease and Oil Cleaner, Sensitive Laundry Liquid, Stain Remover and Dishwashing Liquid were all certified in June 2026. Sensitive Laundry Sheets is not GECA certified. Certification is granted product by product rather than to the brand as a whole, so the GECA mark on a box applies to the product in that box.

Koh started in Australia and the liquid formulas are still made there, so the products were assessed under the Australian scheme and the mark is printed on the packaging that ships to the UK. The certification attaches to the product, not to the country it is sold in, so a GECA-certified product is the same certified product whether you buy it in Sydney or Sheffield. GECA is not a UK or EU certification, and we do not present it as one or substitute a UK label in its place.
