Why can’t I enter my full address at checkout?Updated 4 days ago

TL;DR: Checkout caps Address Line 1 at 30 characters. Split the address across Line 1, Line 2 and the Company field, and use common abbreviations. Keep the postcode and town exactly as they are.

Address Line 1

30 characters

The field stops accepting input at the cap.

The fix

Split across fields

Use Line 2 and the Company field for the rest.

Why can’t I enter my full address at checkout?

A small number of customers hit a 30 character limit on Address Line 1 during checkout. The field simply stops accepting characters once you reach the cap. The rest of your address still fits, it just needs to go into Address Line 2 or the Company field instead of all on one line.

Your full address still fits, it just needs to be spread across more than one field. The steps below get the order through.

How do I fit my address in?

Split the address across two lines, putting the house or flat number and street on Line 1 and the building name, estate, village or district on Line 2. Use common abbreviations such as St for Street, Rd for Road, Ave for Avenue, Cres for Crescent, Bldg for Building and Ste for Suite. Drop commas, slashes and other punctuation. Use the Company field for long building or business names where it is available.

✓ Step 1: Split across two lines

Line 1: house or flat number and street.
Line 2: building name, estate, village or district.

✓ Step 2: Abbreviate

Street → St, Road → Rd, Avenue → Ave, Crescent → Cres, Building → Bldg, Suite → Ste.

✓ Step 3: Drop the punctuation

Remove commas, full stops, slashes, and a leading “The” before building names. They eat characters without adding anything.

✓ Step 4: Use the Company field

Where checkout offers a Company field, put long building or business names there instead of on Line 1.

What should I leave exactly as it is?

Leave the postcode and the town unchanged. Those two fields are what the carrier validates the address against, so abbreviating or altering them can stop the delivery going through even if the order is accepted at checkout.

Leave the postcode and town exactly as they are. Those are the fields the carrier validates against, so shortening or altering them can cause problems even if checkout accepts the order.
