Why won't my Mop Pad stick to the Spray Mop Plate?Updated 6 hours ago

TL;DR: Press the pad firmly onto the underside of the Spray Mop Plate and slide it back and forth to engage the hook-and-loop. Both surfaces need to be clean and completely dry. A new pad sometimes needs extra pressure on the first attach. If the backing looks flat or matted, replace the pad.

Why won't my Mop Pad stick to the Spray Mop Plate?

Make sure both the Spray Mop Plate and the pad backing are clean and completely dry, then press the pad firmly onto the underside of the plate and slide it back and forth while keeping the pressure on. The sliding motion is what drives the hooks into the pad fibres and locks them. New pads sometimes need extra pressure on the first attach. The technique is the same for Everyday Mop Pads, Deep Clean Mop Pads and the Dusting Mop Pad.

✓ Three steps

Most pads that will not stick are not faulty. It is the sliding motion in step three that people miss.

1 Clean and dry both surfaces. The Spray Mop Plate and the pad backing both need to be free of lint, dust and moisture before you start.

2 Press firmly. Place the pad against the underside of the plate and push evenly across the whole surface, not just the middle.

3 Slide it back and forth. Keep the pressure on and move the pad in short back-and-forth strokes. That motion drives the hooks into the fibres and locks them.

What if the pad still will not stick?

Three things usually explain a pad that will not hold after pressing and sliding. Lint, dust or debris trapped in the hook-and-loop stops the hooks reaching the fibres, so shake or lightly brush both the pad backing and the plate. A pad that is still damp from the wash will not grip either, because damp fibres are heavier and do not lock in, so let it dry completely first. And a pad whose backing looks flat, fluffed out or matted has reached the end of its life and needs replacing.

Lint, dust and debris trapped in the hooks stop them reaching the pad fibres. Shake the pad out and lightly brush both the backing and the Spray Mop Plate, then try again.

A pad straight off the line will not grip. Damp fibres are heavier and do not lock into the hooks properly, so let a freshly washed pad dry all the way through before you put it back on.

If the hook-and-loop side looks flat, fluffed out or matted rather than plush, the pad has reached the end of its usable life and no amount of pressure will bring the grip back. Time for a fresh one. What else to look for is covered in How do you wash the Mop Pads?.

Does washing affect how well the pad sticks?

Yes. How the pad is washed and dried has a direct effect on the grip. Wash the green Deep Clean and blue Everyday Mop Pads at a maximum of 40 degrees and the Dusting Mop Pad cold, then air-dry them in the shade until they are completely dry. Never use fabric softener, which coats the microfibre and the backing, and never tumble dry a mop pad, because heat shortens the life of the hook-and-loop as well as the pad itself.

⚠ What kills the grip

Fabric softener coats the microfibre and the backing, so the hooks have nothing to bite into. Tumble drying is worse again: heat flattens the loops permanently. Neither is reversible, so a pad washed this way will keep slipping off.

Is it the same technique for every pad?
